However, series creator Michel Ancel still sees a future for the series on next-gen, and believes that current hardware couldn’t match his vision for the project.

Speaking with Gamereactor, Michel Ancel spoke once again on the prospects of Beyond Good & Evil 2 on next-gen consoles. While the designer wouldn’t confirm that development was underway for BG&E2 specifically, he did give an explanation for why fans never saw the sequel on the previous generation:

The previously leaked concept video gave us the first hints that Ubisoft’s plans for BG&E2 were looking far too advanced for the Xbox 360 and PS3’s potential, and company-wide, the publisher seems to be taking their time with their most demanded franchises. And with the next generation of hardware on the horizon, BG&E may not be the only Ubisoft franchise with big announcements incoming.

“Now that we have the [new] consoles around the corner we’re working on them. We’re trying to see how we can get the power out of those consoles because there are still things we need to understand on those consoles, but yes, Beyond Good & Evil is a project I always have in mind and I hope good things will come for this project very soon.”

Going by Ancel’s comments, it seems that the developer is working on letting the hardware do the heavy lifting in making a massive game world or story possible. While it may have been possible to bring Ancel’s vision to life on previous consoles, the difference in potential is far greater than the simple specs would imply (a claim we’ve heard from the team behind yet another long-demanded sequel).

Although fans would likely be happy with any continuation of the original game’ story, or even an explanation of how the leaked announcement trailer will or won’t be related to the finished product, Ancel is taking his time. Ubisoft has maintained that “it will happen when it will be perfect.” And recalling the kind of worlds and planets Ancel is imagining for BG&E2, the wait could end up being more than worth it.
